Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of metamythology in Euripides’ Ion. Ion’s characters show a high degree of mythological self-awareness since they often refer to and comment on their own myth. Moreover, Euripides declares in a metadramatic way the innovations he introduces with the Ion both into the Athenian mythology and into his contemporary dramaturgy.
