Abstract

Medusa and Athena - two women of Greek mythology who still polarise today. The epic feud makes Medusa a "monster". The fact that her head can be found on Athena's breastplate raises some questions from a feminist perspective. Violence, power and patriarchy are just some of the keywords that are examined in more detail in this text. Poseidon takes advantage of the beautiful Medusa in Athena's temple and it is the victim who is punished, not the aggressor. But why? In order to understand this plot, the figure of Athena must be examined more closely. Her unusual relationship with her father Zeus contains some answers as to why Athena makes decisions that are all too often designed in favour of men and therefore to the detriment of women. After her transformation by Athena's hand, however, Medusa does not surrender to her god-given fate but, from today's perspective, embodies an icon of feminism. So what can we learn from a myth that is around 2,000 years old?
